Spending the weekend at my childhood home, I came across two of the books of the late Hubert Reeves, which were key in developing my passion for astronomy and the cosmos 30+ years ago.
I think I'll take them home, read them again and maybe one day my kids will also pick them up... 🥰

PK 104-29.1 (Jones 1)

Earlier this month I had the chance to capture this small planetary nebula in constellation Pegasus - it is not a so often seen and quite difficult to find information about it. I am a fan of these types of nebulae because despite lacking some jazziness, the way the seem to float in space is truly appealing to me.

NGC 7822

NGC 7822 is a large gas region in constellation Cepheus, encompassing the star forming region Sharpless 171 and a young star cluster called Berkeley 59. The latter contains one of the hottest star nearby our sun, BD+66 1673, whose surface temperature is about 45’000 Kelvin, against 4’500 Kelvin at our Sun and it is 100’000 more luminous than it. It is this cluster that lits the whole area. On the right, the bright region contains several pillars of cold molecular gas and dark dust, commonly named elephant trunks.

This is an SHO narrowband image with RGB stars, photographed during September 2023 at Barcarena, Portugal, in a total of 46 hours.

To colorize it I've used @adamblock64 NB Colour Map new script which I found it makes so much easier to do it! It is usually the biggest ordeal I have when processing NB imagens - not anymore. 😄

Barnard 150 - The Seahorse in Cepheus

Just finished a new project which was shot during my holidays, this time of the know Seahorse Nebula in Cepheus constellation. It is an HaLRGB composition in a total of 26 hours integration, shot in a Bortle 4 sky.

Sh2-140 in Cepheus

Today marks my third year as amateur astrophotographer and it's a good timing to reveal what I consider one of my best photos so far.
Sh2-140 is a star forming region located at about 2,900 light years from us in the constellation Cepheus. It is a beautiful and complex area and it features different kinds of structures, being the most prominent the hydrogen rich red clouds whose brightest structure is called Sh2-140, but also the dark dust clouds called LDN 1204 and 2304. In the middle there is a bright patch where the nearby young stars of cluster Pismis-Moreno-1 lighten the dust cloud nearby which sits in front of the red emission nebula. At the same time, these dark clouds block the light from the stars behind, which is seen by the reduced number of visible ones when compared with other areas. To be noticed the huge amount of stars in some areas; after all, we are looking to the Perseus arm of our Milky Way.

Barnard’s Galaxy

Barnard’s Galaxy, or NGC 6822, is a barred irregular galaxy within our Local Group, located at about 1.5 million light-years; it is the closest non-satellite galaxy to the Milky Way. It features an abundance of blue hot young stars and several star forming regions, here visible as the pinkish “bubbles” around it, which are unusually numerous for the galaxy size - Barnard’s galaxy has spent most of its time in isolation but it became quite close to our Milky Way and gravitational interaction is believed to have triggered all this star formation.

This photo was one of the hardest to capture and process. It doesn’t rise very much in the horizon, increasing the negative effects of seeing and light pollution. Nevertheless, it was still possible to capture also the integrated flux nebula which fills this field of view.

The Cygnus Chest

The Sadr Region is a gas rich area *visually* surrounding the star Sadr (arabic to "chest", referring to where it sits in the constellation Swan) and place of some of the most known nebulae, like the Crescent or Butterfly. Despite looking inside the nebula, Sadr is located at about 1,800 light years, whilst the nebula is at 5,000 light years; hence much closer to us. It is a F8 supergiant and its spectrum is one of the references to classify other stars. 

This SHO rendition of the area is the first new photo in almost four months, after some equipment maintenance and lots, and lots of clouds. After so long, smoke from Canada's wildfires, Full Moon and winds of 30 km/h haven't deterred me…

NGC 2174 - The Monkey Head Nebula

Without mount for three months now and with constant bad weather, I've been reprocessing old photos, trying to find new framings for "new photos". This Monkey Head Nebula is an example of such - never happy with the first photo, I think this new approach is definitely an improvement... 😊

NGC 6820 in Vulpecula

Near the well known Dumbbell Nebula, in the constellation Vulpecula (the Little Fox), lies a lesser known emission nebula named Sh2-86, listed in the Sharpless catalogue. This area is an active star formation location, which can be seen by the young cluster (NGC 6823) within the bluish oxygen rich nebula near the center and, nearby, small black clouds called Bok globules are the material from which a star may emerge. 

This image is a cropped and rescaled version of my previous image of this area, focusing in the brighter and smaller details. Secondary effects of lack of new data... 😊

Plowing Through Space

Alpha Camelopardis (a-Cam), the blue bright star right in the center of this image, is an O-type supergiant star easily visible to the naked eye. It is about 40 times as as massive and 30 times as large (radius) than our Sun, with a surface temperature of 30,000 K. It is moving quite fast, at over 60 km per second, making it a runaway star, likely from the nearby NGC 1502 open cluster. Why would that happen? It is uncertain but gravitational interactions with other stars in the progenitor cluster or a nearby supernova may be the cause.
a-Cam is also producing massive supersonic stellar winds, which is confined into a bow shock due to the compression of the interstellar medium, in this case the glowing hydrogen alpha cloud being crossed; this effect is seen by the bubble enclosing the star, which has a radius of about 10 light years. In a way, like a vessel plowing through a cosmic sea.

While not the most eye-catching photo I’ve taken, it is an interesting phenomena occurring in a fairly void area of the night sky, it posed a challenge to photograph due to nebula faintness.

M101 - The Pinwheel Galaxy

In the constellation of Ursa Major, at about 25 million light years from us lies the Pinwheel Galaxy. This beautiful galaxy has 170,000 light years across, about twice of our Milky Way.
In the photo, two types of color clusters hint on the objects present: the red-pinkish ones are the hydrogen rich nebulas where star forming is taking place and the blue ones on the spiral arms are clusters of young and hot blue stars.

M51 - The Whirlpool Galaxy

The Whirlpool Galaxy is one of the most spectacular sights when observing the night sky. Located at about 31 million years from us, it is a grand design spiral galaxy interacting with another one, in a slow dance by which both will merge within several million years. As a result of this, tidal streams of stars are swirling around, here seen as the faint light patch around. The Whirlpool Galaxy has lots of star formation areas - the bluish areas reveal the presence of young and hot stars.

Less visible, several yellowish smudges can be found near the brightest star in the image - HD117818. What are these? It is no less than a galaxy cluster located at about 2.4 billion years, meaning the light we see today left the cluster that long ago. By that time, life on Earth consisted of microscopic organisms in the sea and oxygen was just beginning the build up in the atmosphere.

M94 - The Croc’s Eye Galaxy

Located at Canes Venatici (“Hunting Dogs”) constellation, M94 is a spiral galaxy at about 15 million light years from us. It has a very bright nucleus surrounded by a ring of active star formation, generating clusters of hot blue stars - beyond that, a population of older stars dominate and therefore its reddish color. However, there are also some star formation areas (not
visible here) in the outer disk.
The galaxy seems to have an outer ring which in fact are the galaxy arms: due to the short integration time and the light polluted sky they can’t be resolved (hint for future work but not sure if possible in visible light… 😀 ).

The Jellyfish Nebula

IC 443, also known as Jellyfish Nebula, is a supernova remnant located at 5,000 light years in the constellation Gemini. This supernova has created neutron star CXOU J061705.3+222127, the collapsed core of the exploded star; these neutron stars have a density of 400 million tons per cubic centimer - in other words, the mass of about 1’800 Great Pyramids of Giza fitted in a cube with one centimer side.
Near the top right corner, a small planetary nebula called HoCr1 (Howell-Crisp 1) can be seen. It was found in 2006 by amateur astronomers Michael Howell and Richard Crisp - always fun to find objects we were not expecting in a photo… 🙂

M81 Group

Sometimes I have an image in my head that I simply don't have the skill/artistry to get there. This image of M81 group is a prime example, as it is the result of 5 different reprocessing, the first two published and the others weren't, but somehow, I was never really happy with it. 
But this time... I think I got there... Hopefully won't change my mind in the near future... 😂

Messier 38 - A cluster in the web

Messier 38 (M38), also known as the Starfish Cluster, is an open star cluster located in the northern constellation Auriga. The cluster lies at a distance of 4,200 light years from Earth and has an apparent magnitude of 7.4, making it invisible to the naked eye but easily identifiable with a pair of binoculars. Nearby, on the left of the image, a smaller cluster - NGC 1907 - can also be seen. These two clusters are unrelated but a 2002 study reveals they are presently in a fly by one by the other.
Permeating the scene like a spider web, hydrogen rich clouds farther away, at 12,000 light years. These are part of Tadpoles (not seen here) star forming region.
